On Saturday 3rd October, Sports Banger and King Alpha Sound System are tearing it up in Shoreditch for a gig hosted by Unite the Union, marking 90 years since the Battle of Cable Street – and with all ticket funds donated to workers on strike, it’s a cause to get behind.
The night commemorates one of the defining moments of British anti-fascist history. In 1936, Mosley’s British Union of Fascists were forced to abandon their march through Whitechapel’s diverse and largely Jewish community, faced down by thousands of local people of every background who had gathered to reject the politics of hate and division. The gig forms part of a wider programme of events celebrating that resistance. Leading the line-up is Sports Banger, the genre-defying fashion label and cultural force run by Jonny Banger – rooted in rave, resistance and British iconography, and known for its riotous fashion shows, Mega Raves and Glastonbury Shangri-La takeovers – bringing a stacked line-up of DJs. They’re joined by King Alpha Sound System, the serious UK rig headed up by Ras Peter and Ras Joseph.
