It’s taking over the Ryan’s Bar site
After 32 years in business, popular Irish pub Ryan’s Bar closed at the end of December but the site isn’t sitting empty for long as it’s being transformed into The Mary Wollstonecraft Freehouse. Ryan’s, opened in the early nineties, was the first time that the site on Stoke Newington Church Street was used as a pub, having first been a drapers in the late 19th century, and then a series of cafes and restaurants.
Now it’s beginning a new chapter as another boozer, named after the writer, philosopher and women’s rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft, best known for her feminist work A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Wollstonecraft lived and worked in Newington Green in the early 1780s, where she founded a school for girls. A Maggi Hambling sculpture commemorating Wollstonecraft was unveiled in Newington Green in 2020.
