It follows the huge success of the Grand Sumo Tournament at the Royal Albert Hall
If you didn’t manage to score tickets to the Grand Sumo Tournament, which took place in London earlier this October for the first time in over thirty years, you’ll want to pay attention to this. A new theatrical Sumo experience will be coming to the capital next June with Tokyo Nights.
Taking over Borough Hall in Greenwich, Tokyo Nights will feature Sumo (involving four former professional wrestlers) sushi dining, and sake, in a space designed to evoke the streets of Tokyo. The Dohyō (the ring) will be at the heart of the action, with different dining options available, from a premium ring-side menu to more relaxed balcony seating.
The team behind Tokyo Nights has worked on events including Grand Expedition, Chambers of Flavour and Secret Cinema, and includes Tokyo-based, London-born artist David Sharibani, aka Lord K2, who has had behind-the-scenes access to sumo stables and the Kokugikan arena in Tokyo.
Speaking about the experience, Sharibani said: “Tokyo and London are both cultural powerhouses—different in character but alike in creative spirit. The two cities have long respected and inspired each other, and transporting Sumo to London continues that dialogue. Years ago, Sumo captured the British imagination when it aired on Channel 4 and became a cult classic. Now we have the chance to relive that excitement—this time over dinner at Tokyo Nights, with the grit, ritual, and flavour of the Kokugikan itself.”
