Kings Hall Leisure Centre is getting a big revamp over the next few years
Saunas are proving to be the hottest wellness trend of 2025; Londoners just can’t get enough of sweating in a sauna and cooling off in a cold plunge, and now another new one is on the way. Kings Hall leisure centre in Clapton, formerly known as Hackney Public Baths, was first opened as a public bathhouse in the Victorian era. Though the Grade-II listed building has been in use as a leisure centre, complete with a pool, gym and fitness studio, the space has fallen into disrepair over the last few years thanks to structural wear and tear, outdated systems and increased maintenance costs.
But it won’t be that way for much longer as Hackney Council has just approved plans to restore Kings Hall to its former glory. The designs, developed by FaulknerBrowns, retain many of the building’s historic elements and include the addition of a new swimming pool, sports hall, fitness suite, sauna, steam room, and accessible entrance.
Speaking about the renovation, Caroline Woodley, Mayor of Hackney, said: “Over generations, thousands of people have learnt to swim or use the gym at Kings Hall, and it has been difficult to see such a beautiful building deteriorate as it has aged.
“Despite challenging financial times, it is right that we’re investing to bring the leisure centre back to its full glory – protecting a historic building for future generations, but more importantly providing modern leisure facilities that our communities deserve in a part of Hackney that is currently underserved.”
Works are slated to begin later this year with a completion date of 2028, and while the space is closed, members will be able to use another Better Leisure Centre.
