It’s out with Lagom and in with Hendl at Hackney Church Brew Co.
London’s love for rotisserie keeps rolling on. Sal Whitehead and Hakan Guney, the owners of chicken restaurant Peck Peck in Hackney, are opening new concept Hendl, which is all about the art of rotisserie. And they’re not going far to do it, taking over as kitchen resident (a vacancy left by Lagom) at Hackney Church Brew Co, just up the road from their Mare Street restaurant.
After working at Sutton and Sons, Sal moved over to Peck Peck when the chippie team opened the restaurant on Graham Road in 2019, managing the site with Hakan. The pair then bought the shop in 2021 and relocated it to a bigger site on Mare Street two years ago. Now with Hendl, the pair have “put together everything we know about chicken cookery, comfort food, simplicity and craft to create some truly mind-blowing rotisserie.”
As well the chicken, which will be brined for four hours, slow roasted and served with a variety of glazes including harissa, aji verde and nduja hot honey, Hendl’s will also be doing porchetta, Sunday roasts and bar snacks. The menu’s not quite finalised yet but expect the likes of roast chicken fat potatoes, camembert bites with hot honey, and wings with house ranch to feature.
