Avi Shashidhara, formerly of Michelin Bib Gourmand Pahli Hill, takes over the former Queen Adelaide this September.
Shepherd’s Bush is getting a proper Indian pub. Chef Avi Shashidhara, formerly of Pahli Hill in Fitzrovia (Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a Great British Menu win in 2023), is opening Talli Queen this September, taking over the 120-year-old former Queen Adelaide on Uxbridge Road. The 120-cover pub keeps its wraparound bar, open kitchen, dining room and terrace, but swaps in a menu built around a custom charcoal grill and tandoor, designed to be ordered freely rather than in courses.
The name splices talli, Hindi for tipsy, with the pub’s old nickname among Shepherd’s Bush locals, “The Queen”. Shashidhara has drawn on Kerala’s toddy shops, Bangalore’s neighbourhood bars, southern India’s military canteens and Lucknow’s chai stalls for a menu spanning military canteen-style meatballs, toddy shop clams, Kerala chilli beef and Lucknow-style kulcha with kebabs and goat nihari, alongside his Great British Menu papadi chaat. Sundays go family-style, with slow-cooked lamb shoulder, biryani and charcoal grill meats shared at the table.
Drinks wise there are18 draught lines including cask ales and stout (this is a proper pub), a concise cocktail list, and Indian spirits like the rarely-seen Mahua. Talli Queen joins a growing scene of pubs doing serious Indian food in London, following in the footsteps of Islington’s The Tamil Prince and The Tamil Crown, and Archway gastropub The Great Indian, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet.
