It comes from chefs Celia D’Ortiz and Jake Barwood
After running the Codillos sandwich pop-up last year (along with Dusty Knuckle and Bread Ahead baker Andy), Celia and Jake have taken the jump to a permanent space with Cantinera in Brockley. The yellow-fronted restaurant is their blend of a Mexican cantina and a Spanish tapas bar, and features a weekly changing blackboard menu of seasonal small plates.
Dishes from the first few weeks have included the likes of:
- red mullet tiradito and habanero mayo tostada
- courgette & manchego croquetas with fried capers
- pork belly skewer with recado mayo
- potato tortilla with chile de arbol onion salsa and goat’s cheese
- bavette with peanut & prune mole and burnt shallot
- fig ice cream with caramel sauce and almond
Cantinera is currently open for dinner on Thursdays and lunch and dinner on Fridays and Saturdays, and on a walk-in basis, but the team is looking to extend these hours in the summer. It’s also BYOB, with corkage at £7 per head, so grab a bottle of wine or mezcal and head on down.
