A Huge Free Festival Is Coming to Royal Docks With More Than 50 Events

The Royal Docks has always been a place of movement, ships arriving, goods departing, industries rising and falling

This autumn it becomes a stage for a brand-new cultural free festival, Royal Docks Originals. Running from 15th September – 4th October, the free biennial launches with a spectacular programme of more than 50 events under the banner Metamorphosis: a celebration of transformation and journeys.

The beating heart of the festival is Rekindling, a major fire installation by French fire alchemists Compagnie Carabosse. Across two nights only, Thursday 25th & Friday 26th September, Royal Victoria Dock will be set alight in an immersive blaze of flame, shadow, and sound. Think flickering fire pots, glowing sculptures, and a site-specific soundscape built from oral histories and live music, all reflecting the Royal Docks’ shifting identity – from industrial powerhouse to cultural engine of London. Carabosse have stunned audiences from Barcelona to Seoul; now they’re bringing their magic to East London, with the water and skyline as their backdrop. This is the one you don’t want to miss.

But Rekindling is just one part of a stacked line-up. Elsewhere, British-Punjabi artist Chila Kumari Singh Burman MBE brings neon deities and a life-size tiger sculpture to the waterfront (yes the one who made Tate Britain LIT), YARA + DAVINA invite Londoners to mark Arrivals + Departures, and Graphic Rewilding splashes a vast botanical mural across the Pump House. There’ll be live music and poetry aboard the IFS Cloud Cable Car, commissions from artists like Joy Yamusangie and Luke Gray, and pop-ups ranging from hip-hop dance battles to bioluminescent gardens.

The programme isn’t only about big names – it’s rooted in the local community. Expect open studios, creative careers days, markets showcasing makers from Newham, and even wood-fired sauna sessions overlooking the water. Add in open-water swimming, rare heritage tours of places like Millennium Mills, and performances from local youth collectives, and you’ve got a festival that truly celebrates East London’s creativity in all its forms. And did we mention, it’s all FREE.
