Budding veggies or healthy eaters can enjoy fresh food, handpicked daily from a natural vegetable garden at The Skip Garden Kitchen, which opens this summer. Situated in King’s Cross, within the largest construction site in Europe, The Global Generation Skip Garden is opening up its Skip Garden Kitchen for all to enjoy. There are a number of special events on the horizon to celebrate its 10-year anniversary, including a 10-course meal, themed around festival fun.
The kitchen serves up a variety of healthy vegetarian foods, where you’ll dine alfresco on a large table overlooking the garden. Testing out some of the food, we indulged in a goat’s cheese frittata and a carrot dip so thick and scrummy that it could easily be mistaken for hummus. Adding date soda bread, beetroot salad and feta pastries to the mix, by the end of the meal we were well and truly stuffed. But, after letting the food go down, we found it hard to resist a lemon herb polenta cake with cream and stewed rhubarb. The full-flavored palate and obvious hard work and attention to detail made it a real treat for the taste buds.
But if you want to work up an appetite before dinner (and it’d be a wise move) then you’ll be able to wander around the Skip Garden, which is a peaceful and charming natural environment, hidden away from the outside concrete metropolis.
Within the garden you’ll find fresh flowers and homegrown vegetables, which are produced within the unused skips, taken from local building sites. There’s even a beehive, containing very busy bees and a yurt for you to warm yourself by the fire if it gets cold.
The Skip Garden is free and opens Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays to visitors, plus every Saturday during the summer.
