The Cosy Kettle is bar that prides itself on doing two Cs very well – cake and cocktails. But if there is one C word that really defines the place (no, not that one, get your mind out of the gutter) it’s creativity.
We headed down (quite literally, it’s in the basement of the Somers Town Coffee House in Euston) on a Friday night to find the place buzzing but with a much more relaxed vibe than the rowdy ground floor of the pub. The venue is kitsch in the best way possible, with the décor designed to make visitors feel welcome and trust us, once you’re settled into the lounges, you’ll find it very hard to leave.
While there is a short cocktail menu available, it would be a crying shame not to make the most of the expertise of Ed and the crew behind the bar who will gladly whip you up whatever your heart desires, and offer suggestions if you’re not quite sure what that is.
We started with an elderflower and pink grapefruit dacquiri paired with a very tasty Jamaican ginger cake. A clever take on the Battenberg cake was next – a concoction of mini cocktails mixed into a jar that made it difficult to tell where the cake ended and the drink began.
We then decided to try one of the seasonal specials found scrawled on the walls of the bar. ‘The Red Wedding’ warmed us right up with its combination of hazelnut liqueur and muddled berries and was the perfect accompaniment to lemon drizzle cake.
London is not short of a place to get a cocktail but if you’re looking for somewhere comfortable, comely and free of that other c word (yes, that one) then Cosy Kettle is it.
