Train strikes will affect services in London during May
This spring, members of ASLEF, the train drivers’ trade union, will go on strike in an ongoing dispute over pay. The union announced a programme of rolling one-day strikes and a six-day overtime ban in April, writing that they aim to get train drivers their first pay rise in five years. This industrial action will affect the services of 16 train companies, disrupting travel to, from and within London.
When are the next train strikes in London?
The train strikes planned by ASLEF will start in May. Here are the dates to be aware of:
- Tues 7th May 2024 – Members of ASLEF will walk out at c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern/Gatwick Express, South Western Railway (main line and depot drivers) and SWR Island Line on this day.
- Wed 8th May 2024 – Members of ASLEF will walk out at Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains on this day.
- Thurs 9th May 2024 – Members of ASLEF will walk out at LNER, Northern Trains, and TransPennine Trains on this day.
ASLEF members will also take part in an overtime ban from Mon 6th – Sat 11th May 2024.
About the upcoming strike action, ASLEF’s General Secretary Mick Whelan said: “Train drivers at these TOCs [train operating companies] have not had an increase in salary for five years. That is completely wrong. The employers – and the government – think we are going to give up and run away. They’re wrong. In the words of Tom Petty, we won’t back down…”
