Some neighbourhood restaurants can be a bit sketchy to say the least but lately we’ve been finding some absolute corkers! The latest is Assiette Anglaise a French Brasserie located on Liverpool Road in Islington with big neighbourhood vibes, a modern seasonal menu, simple yet modern decor and a token couple of tables outside.
The peeps behind the restaurant, Ludo and Mairead also own Le Peche Mignon, a French style cafe which lives just a few hundred down the road. We visited on a Wednesday evening to test drive the dinner menu starting with Crispy pig’s head, apple, radish & pancetta; three crispy balls filled with soft meat these were possibly our favourite dish of the meal…
For mains the Cod fillet, courgette & basil purée & prawn stuffed courgette flower was a summery dish, not too heavy but enough to feel satisfied, the lightly battered courgette flower stuffed with prawns provided the perfect side kick to the soft flaky fish. Slow cooked pork belly, salt & vinegar cabbage, pear & soy glaze was well cooked, juicy meat topped with crunchy crackling if only a little on the salty side.
A creamy pannacotta infused with expensive Kusmi tea and a rich dark chocolate and coffee mousse finished us off…and we mean quite literally finished us off!
With it’s relaxed atmosphere, pretty views, cracking food and French wine list Assiette Anglaise has cracked the neighbourhood restaurant rules. Take a date, they’ll think you’re right in the know!
