Thisweek’s LDNER will give you little motivation for getting into shape and doing something different. She is a world record holder, hoola hooping 180 hoops at once. If that wasn’t impressive enough she can roller skate in high heels whilst hooping, has performed with Kenzo, OC, Nike and she loves coffee. Get in to the hoop…meet Marawa The Amazing…
Where do you live in London and why?
EAST! Because everything I need is there, it’s very multicultural you can get great food from so many different cultures, there is GREAT coffee and nice parks…I have always felt at home there, it reminds me of Melbourne as it’s a really multicultural city, you can get a mix of so many cultures, flavours, sounds…I love it, it’s constantly inspiring and interesting.
How did you get into hula hooping?
I studied at a circus school in Australia. I had done Rhythmic Gymnastics as a child, so I had played with hoops then but it was much later when I was 20, at circus school that I really got into it. I wanted to learn how to split multiple hoops, circus style. And I love hoops because they are so easy to travel with and circles are just so good. I love it.
What’s your top tips for keeping that hoop spinning?
Don’t panic…the main thing is to have a big hoop, the bigger the hoop the easier it is! People always tell me that they can’t do it but thats because they are trying to do it with a kids hoop. You need a bigger hoop, thats 90% of being able to do it, then once you start spinning it, don’t bend your legs…just breathe and push with your tummy, no crazy wild hip action or wriggles, the movement is actually quite small and controlled.
Which other performers do you admire?
I love the whole cast of Briefs, such a good show, always sold out in London. The show is a mix of burlesque and circus and they nail it, 100% champions. My favourite showgirls are Fancy Chance, Ylva Falk, Lada Redstar and Narcissister. All of these ladies KILL IT on the stage, so much energy and effort behind each routine, always a joy to watch.[URIS id=60211]
When you’re not keeping up hoops where are you hanging out?
Kaffa Coffee Dalston, the best ethiopian coffee outside of Africa! I love hanging there, you meet different people everyday and its 2 doors down from the hooper market, my hoop shop haha, so its very convenient. Otherwise I am skating in LA, I have been skating more and more lately. I love it…i’m working on getting better at spinning.
