When you think of Oval you probably think cricket before you think food, but new opening 24 The Oval is trying to change that. Chefs Simon Woodrow (ex Wild honey and Paradise Garage) and George East (ex The Dairy) are in charge of the menu, which is modern British and a mix of small and large plates – dishes include smoked eel with turnip cannelloni; BBQ monkfish with smoked mussels, salsify and seaweed; and pork loin with braised head, spiced gnocchi and broccoli, and they do Sunday roasts and a very reasonable tasting menu at under £40 too. With food like this, al fresco space both front and back, and a basement whisky bar in the works, this sounds like the perfect neighbourhood joint, although we predict non-locals will be making the journey too.
