david de la mano at hang up gallery

Acrylic, coffee and ink isn’t a typical trio of artistic materials, but Spanish street artist David de la Mano is far from conventional. The artist is known for creating large dystopian murals on building exteriors, walls and other public spaces with work all over the world and his new solo show entitled ‘Adrift’ at Hang-Up Gallery in Stoke Newington is his first exhibition in the UK. True to form, David spent the weekend before the exhibition opening painting a street wall in the local area as well as the interior gallery walls from floor to ceiling – creating the perfect setting for his new body of work. Dark, shadowy silhouettes of people, animals and modes of transport are vividly depicted minus the details, making a haunting comment on the current refugee and migration crisis where people are forced to move on mass without a destination or any certainty. And 10% of profits of a one-off print will be donated to the Refugee Community Kitchen – this is not only an unusual show but a paragon for the alliance between art and societal politics.
