You barely have to leave the station at Peckham Rye to stumble into Coal Rooms. Housed in the former Grade II listed ticket office from the 1930s, the restaurant centres around a large, sunken open-plan kitchen with a robata grill and smoker on full display. By day this place is great to grab a coffee and their (already) famous coffee-cured bacon sarnie, but night is when the magic really happens.

The menu is a bit of a lucky dip though, made up of small plates, meat for one, sharing steaks, fish, sides and sauces with unusual names, we weren’t really sure what we were going to end up with – and we still have no idea what that WOW WOW sauce is… Paying homage to the on-site butchery, the regularly changing menu includes lots of interesting cuts of meat and we opted for the Goat Chop and Smoked Daphne’s Lamb –  although we wish we went for the 40 day-aged Dexter sharing steak as the goat chop was mostly fat!

When it came to the sides and small plates, the coal roasted cauliflower with miso bagna cauda and furikake was the star of the show and cooked to perfection. Other highlights included the ‘Peckham Fatboy’, roast potatoes with a huge lump of raclette, onions and beef fat mayonnaise which any fan of cheesy chips would love; the set-your-mouth-on-fire burnt hispi with jerk spices and crackling; and roasted carrots with Vadouvan spices. We managed to squeeze down their Millionaire Shortbread for dessert too and it was SO worth it with melted chocolate, brown butter caramel, rapeseed oil shortbread and waste barista milk ice cream all served in a paper cup.

Coal Rooms really was an interesting one for us, we weren’t blown away by the meat which is their specialty, but with interesting sides and unique flavours they’re definitely onto something good and it’s still early days.
