Gul and Sepoy is the latest from Harneet Baweja of Gunpowder and Madame D’s fame. With each of his three restaurant’s being an actual stone’s throw from each other on (or just off) Commercial Street, there’s no doubt he’s got a growing empire in this part of London.

This isn’t any brand roll-out however – each of the restaurants has it’s own identity and style. Whereas Gunpowder was simple home cooked family recipes and Madame D’s was inspired by the Nepalese dishes found in the Himalayas, Gul and Sepoy is a more refined offering.

This isn’t fine dining however – the place is relaxed and casual and dishes are all for sharing and arrive quickly, as Londoners are well accustomed to by now. The food itself is beautifully presented and many of the dishes wouldn’t look out of place in a Michelin-star restaurant.

We’d recommend ordering about 5 dishes from the menu, which is split into two sections, ‘Gul’ inspired by the banquets of the Raj palaces, and ‘Sepoy’ which is more rustic and provincial. We loved the Jackfruit and Walnut Galouti, three little patties in a rich sauce and the spiced ‘burnt’ cauliflower and potato. Other tips from us include the amazing wild garlic chicken skewers, the paneer in roganjosh space and the stone basss which was marinated in mango and ginger and served on a bright green ‘Corgi’ sauce.

With three hits in a row, the team is on a roll. We’re looking forward to number 4 already…
