The guys behind popular Japanese spots Chisou and Kiri have got a brand new site in London, Sushi Atelier. Located on Great Portland Street, Sushi is very much the focus here – the clue’s in the name – with the most of the action centred around the long wooden sushi bar on the ground floor where you can see the chefs at work.

For bigger groups there’s also tables in the basement but it’s really all about grabbing a seat at the counter and watching the chefs slicing and plating the fresh fish. Oh and they’ve also got a couple of blowtorches, just to add some drama.

Sushi Atelier has the usual safe sushi options on the menu if that’s what you’re after but they’ve also pushed the boat out with some more modern flavour combos – think BBQ Tuna with Parmesan and Razor Clam Ceviche with ginger and whisky jelly.

Two of our favourite dishes of the night were from the carpaccio section, a lightly seared tataki style tuna with child ponzu dressing and an incredibly soft butterfish with a thin sliver of foie gras on each slice. Not a combo we’ve had before but a very, very good one.

Nigiri sushi were excellent too and very reasonably priced for the quality. The same goes for the Unagi (fresh BBQ eel) on pressed rice which was probably the best we’ve had in England and at £14.80, not bad at all for a premium ingredient.

Sushi Atelier is relaxed, fun, fast and well priced and yet another example of great Japanese food which London seems to be excelling in at the moment. If you’re a sushi fan, get this one on the list.
