Things are hotting up in Deptford…right on the heels of The Winemakers Club is Marcella which is now open just a few doors down serving up fresh authentic Italian food. Coming from the people behind the much-loved Artusi in Peckham, Marcella has arrived with swagger and confidence in SE8. The look and feel is very similar to Artusi, all stripped back wooden furniture, white walls, bare wood, and an open kitchen at the back of the room. Marcella also has a basement cocktail bar where you can have a drink if you’re waiting for a table…and judging by the hoards of people trying to get in on the Saturday night we visited, you may well have to wait your turn if you don’t have a rezzie.

The short menu is chalked up on the wall and even though it’s short, we had a hard time choosing what to order. Yep it’s one of those ones where you just want EVERYTHING. We settled on a few small plates to share to begin with: fried artichokes with an amazing aioli; saffron arancini with tomato sauce; and thinly sliced pork belly. All absolute bangers.

Then it was the fresh pasta – we shared small portions (main sizes available too) of gnocchi with bolognese and fusilli with courgette mint and chilli. They were as good as any we’ve had in London and we would easily return just for a big bowl of pasta and a glass of wine. We would have had more pasta in fact but we’d already ordered the special of the day, a belted Galloway fore rib of beef with garlic roast potatoes and salad which was pricey but totally worth it.

All this was finished off with a freshly baked doughnut and a chocolate mousse with cherry and creme fraiche. Yep, they were great too! If you live in Deptford, consider yourself very lucky indeed.
