loti eats | shane’s on canalside

You may have come across Shane’s on Chatsworth Road in Clapton, Shane Harrison’s first London restaurant that brings a New Zealand twist to hearty, wholesome food. Fast forward four years and Shane’s has branched out to a canal side spot at Here East, where his ‘field to plate’ approach of local wild foraged produce really stands out from the other neighbouring spots.

It’s a step up from Chatsworth Road in terms of size – but still retains a fuss-free atmosphere with industrial interiors, wooden tables, hanging baskets of greenery and plenty of high stool seating at the bar. The menu is ever-changing, depending on what’s in season. If the Scottish mussels with wild garlic and cider are on offer be sure to order them, packed full of flavour and a generous portion for a starter, even when sharing. For mains, the juicy Bavette steak in a béarnaise sauce didn’t disappoint either. Whilst the fish of the day, Seabass came beautifully presented on a bed of crushed potatoes and salsa verde. It’s really just simple food done well.

We finished off with a hearty bowl of apple crumble and custard. There’s plenty of winners on the drinks list too, with more than a few gems from New Zealand keeping the wine list interesting and Frizzenti bubbles on tap. A great little option for canal side dining.
