loti eats: aviary

Aviary is the latest opening from the ETM Group who also run some top pubs and restaurants across London, including The Jugged Hare and One Canada Square. This latest is a first for them though, a rooftop venue atop the Montcalm Royal London House complete with outdoor terrace that overlooks Finsbury Square and the rooftops of the City.

We’d recommend kicking off with one of the Sharing Pineapple cocktails – yes they do come in a very instagrammable copper pineapple big enough for two. We had Mary and the Bison, a heady mix of Zubrowka, orange, rosemary, and honey. To start there’s a healthy raw bar section of oysters and the like and we plumped for a yellowfin tuna sashimi plus one of the evening’s specials – asparagus with quail’s egg and burrata.

The modern British menu is also big on the meat which is cooked in the coal oven and comes in a variety of cuts and sizes. We went for a HUGE Longhorn bone-in steak which was nice and tender and slightly charred on the outside, and for something lighter, a chunky piece of brill plus honey glazed carrots and triple cooked chips. For dessert, it’s all about the custard tart with banana ice cream and peanut praline.

Aviary is a welcome addition to London’s rooftop bar and restaurant collection and with great views and crowd pleasing dishes, it’s a perfect place to take a date or group of friends.
