loti eats: smith & wollensky

Smith & Wollensky lives in the Grade II-listed Adelphi Building off the Strand and is the type of place you’d think has been here as long as London’s been a city. In fact Smith & Wollensky started life across the pond in 1977 and this steakhouse, which opened in 2013, is its first outside the US.

It’s all about the steak and the process in the Big Smoke is exactly the same as it is Stateside. Butchered on site after no less than a 28 day stint in the dry-ageing room, S&W showcases top USDA prime beef, making these steaks some of the best in London. Jumping in for weekend brunch we devoured the Smith & Wollensky signature steak sandwich which comes loaded with ‘angry’ onions, horseradish aioli, white cheddar and bacon jam. Served with fries, slaw and a pickle, the steak is rich, tender and full of flavour… it gets the full stars and stripes from us.

If you ain’t feeling the beef then don’t panic, there is more than just the glitzy glamour of the 1920s interior to keep you entertained. The hearty salads are mighty fine, particularly the lemon and truffle oil marinated chicken, heritage tomato and avocado combo.

You can’t leave without having a drink; the wine cellar’s full of award-winning bottles and that bar will lure you in alright. Not only does it look the part but it works whether you’re on a special date or just in need of a long, tall drink.
