loti eats: native

Located in Neal’s Yard, Native serves up a menu using wild foods that are native to the UK – the clue’s in the name. We kicked off with a pigeon kebab something we don’t think we’ve ever eaten before – well not knowingly anyway but it’s safe to say we’ve eaten a few dodgy doner kebabs in our time so who knows?! This was anything but dodgy, however, featuring chunky meat coated in a spice mix served on a pitta with beetroot hummus and pickles. And don’t worry this ain’t no London bird, this pigeon has come from the woods so it’s prime meat.

We complemented the kebab with a wild hare ragu served with buttered salsify, native curds and pickled walnuts – an absolute belter of a dish! Followed by the Cornish pollock with cauliflower leaf pakora which is made from leaves that would otherwise have gone to waste. Something we learnt from sitting at the chefs table and if you can score one of those four seats you’re in for a treat.

There’s ants for dessert – yes ants – foraged from the Kentish woods and sweet ciders where you’d usually find sweet wines. It’s an interesting restaurant, there’s plenty to talk about but the food speaks volumes too. Definitely worth hitting up.
