LOTI EATS: MACELLAIO RC

The newest opening from the Italian beef and tuna specialists Macellaio RC is located on Union Street. The south London site is a restaurant, bakery, butchers and meat theatre all rolled into one, plush red curtains included. Roberto Costa, the man behind the concept, has brought an extra element of theatricality to the new place, with a stage extending into the dining room that shows off all the best cuts of the day.

Like the Exmouth Market site we visited it’s got serious beef, the unmissable Fassona is beaut – the Piedmont mountain grass gives the meat a buttery tenderness and it’s dry-aged and butchered in-house so you know it’s been given a lot of love. But the star of the show for was the juicy Fiorentina T-Bone steak, big enough to have David Attenborough speak a word or two about it.

Worth a shout out too is their hand-prepared steak tartare, served with gherkins, artichokes, onions, Worcestershire sauce, tabasco and Salsa Rubra…despite all that it’s a simple dish that packs flavour. If meat ain’t your thing there’s also plenty of Italian faves featured on the menu too, with their Ligurian bakery turning daily handmade dough into authentic breads and pizzas. With a wine list worth wining on about, Macellaio RC Union Street not only looks the part, it puts on one hell of a show.
