LDNER #185: NATALIE ANGELA ANGOLD

nat

Even though she doesn’t have one herself (she doesn’t, we checked) our LDNER this week Nat, is a lady who knows A LOT about beards. Nat is one of the barbers at Ruffians, Shoreditch and we were excited to learn exactly why it was that she had decided to get into barbering and cutting men’s hair…

Where do you live in London and what do you like about the area?

I live in Crystal Palace, but have grown up in and around South London. I love the eclectic mix of different ethnicities, sounds, smells and cultures. The nightlife in Brixton is right up my street and it’s the perfect place to grab a bite to eat as well.

You’ve worked as a barber for 9 years, how did you get into barbering and cutting men’s hair?

I got my first job at the age of 14, sweeping hair in a barber shop – and I loved it! Not for the hair, but for the atmosphere, the chat, the people going in and out the shop. Then I trained at Toni & Guy, but always knew I wanted to go back into barbering, because I could see that there was a gap in the market for giving the Toni & Guy service in a bloke’s environment.

What is that you like about Ruffians Shoreditch?

I love the fact that Ruffians has a strong Scottish heritage (like my grandmother!) and that we focus on customer service here, above all. I’m also allowed to be as creative as I can be and am pushed to be the best I ought to be – there’s great training here, and loads of genuine encouragement from the rest of the team.

What trends in men’s hair and grooming can you see taking shape in 2017?

We are going to be seeing longer hair, and more natural looking beards. Beard lines are going to be less sharp and preened, but still fairly short (not like the big bushy beards of 2014). Hair will continue to be textured and soft, with some classic cuts coming back through. The fade will always find its way into a haircut trend, but softer, more natural styles will prevail.

Describe your perfect day in London…

Start off at the South Bank, walking the dogs along the river. Jump on the train over to Green Park and have afternoon tea at Fortnum & Mason’s. Walk down to Piccadilly (the dogs have somehow made their way home by now) and sink a few Espresso Martinis in my favourite restaurant San Carlos Cicchetti. Head down to Brixton Jamm for some live music and more cocktails! Then I’m spent.
