places in Hackney are ten-a-penny these days and we have to admit we’re generally a bit sceptical, especially of the ones opening on Stoke Newington High Street. Luckily though Victory Mansion, one of the newest openings, is no business front. Oh no, this place does decent cocktails – HELLO Divorced in Mexico, that’s a negroni-type concoction made with tequila – and good food too.

Food-wise the menu is small, the focus is on sharing and the dishes are pretty unusual but tasty all the same. We were big fans of the fried potatoes with gravy dip, a perfectly acceptable bar snack with cocktails we say, the lamb chops with anchovy and smoked treacle, and the mussels with celeriac. With prices at £7 and under it won’t break the bank either. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the hood.
