loti eats: gunpowder

gunpowder | london on the inside

Indian food is having its day and rightly so…we’ve had to endure sub-standard curry houses for far too long. First came Dishoom, then Kricket and now Gunpowder is joining the line-up as a standout place to get innovative dishes cooked with authentic spices. Think Indian food for the 21st century.

Gunpowder is a small restaurant located on a backstreet in Spitalfields and has a menu made for sharing. We tried at least half the dishes and couldn’t fault any of them, each cleverly spiced with subtly different flavours. Highlights included the generously filled spicy venison and vermicelli doughnut…we’re hoping to see more savoury doughnuts make an appearance on menus this year. Maa’s kashmiri super tender lamb chops were coated in a delish marinade whilst the sigree grilled mustard broccoli had a thick coating of creamy, korma-like sauce.

Don’t miss the Gunpowder aloo chat either, a interesting mix of roasted smashed potatoes, black chickpeas, onions, tomatoes and various other ingredients. And, if you’re in the mood for booze there’s some interesting Indian cocktails too.
