Glasgow. Not what you may traditionally expect. The times they are a ‘changing and shaking off any deep fried misconceptions. Did you know it’s got its own International Comedy Festival? Running from 12th – 29th March? Featuring big names like Jimmy Carr and Simon Amstell? It’s also the Year of Green, and Food and Drink. Busy city. Would be rude for us not to visit.
Virgin trains whisked us up there in a ‘comedy carriage’. Not a dry eye in the house. There are two an hour from Euston (comedians not included). First class is cheaper than you think, and at 125mph, with 20% off advance fares it’s no joke.
Scotland’s largest city is chock full of historical, boutique and trendy hotels, but we stayed at the Malmaison. A former church, but now a stunning hotel with a restaurant that boasts a Michelin starred chef (Martin Wishart) doing traditional and modern French cuisine.
Local food and drink producers, making everything from honey and coffee, make it a foodie heaven. There’s a strong sense of pride, as local breweries such as Drygate serve up tantalising beers (with label artwork from the School of Art) with amazing seasonal produce on small plates.
There’s a ton of stuff to do if you like everything from architecture to the arts, and music to museums. The Kelvingrove art gallery and museum is like a treasure trove of everything from a ceiling hung Spitfire, to a Dali. A very easy way to while away the time.
Music, fashion, shopping, food, drink, history, culture, natural beauty, modern features, fantastic architecture, arts and whisky are all very well represented. There’s a lot going on in Glasgow. It’s time to put it firmly on your map.
