Way down in south London, somewhere in between Dulwich and Brixton, is Tulse Hill, an area that’s slowly on the up and getting some good restaurants to prove it!
Having undergone a massive refurbishment, the Tulse Hill Hotel has just opened in place of what was previously a pretty run down pub. Instead there is now a slick bar, restaurant, private dining room and nine boutique hotel rooms upstairs. The rooms are cosy and well designed, all with ensuite bathrooms and big double beds (there is also one single room if you’re going solo). Simple in style but decked out with some nice pieces – think vintage wooden wardrobes and desks, plus all the mod cons you need such as Nespresso coffee machines and flat screen TVs – not forgetting the fluffy towels and robes. Rates start from around £105 a night and include a decent breakfast so it’s good value for London too.
Even if you’re not staying, the restaurant and bar is definitely worth a visit, particularly for the Sunday roast which is one of the best we’ve had in a long time. Both the beef and pork roasts are slow cooked for hours overnight and served with crispy rosemary potatoes, parsnips, Yorkshire puddings, greens and excellent gravy. We had some great starters too such as potted salmon, roast gurnard with cauliflower, and duck terrine with prunes, plus puds like honey cake and pannacotta, proving that the kitchen can do more than just a good roast.
