Pig hotel, located in the beautiful New Forest in Hampshire, has won a lot of fans over the last few years, picking up five star reviews all over the shop. Finally getting down there ourselves for a weekend break recently, it’s easy to see why it’s become such a popular place.

Firstly, the New Forest itself is a beautiful setting for any hotel, all spooky forests, lakes, open fields and even wild horses roaming around. The main building at The Pig is a grand old country house which has the bar, restaurant and 16 of the 26 rooms. The other 10 are located in the old stables where we were staying for the weekend. Rooms are a good size and simply decorated in a very homely fashion, with fireplaces and huge comfy beds. Our bathroom had a rainforest shower and a roll top bath, positioned right by the window so you could look out over the fields at the back of the stables. Very nice indeed.

It’s down at the restaurant, however, where The Pig really starts to show off. With lots of produce coming from the hotel’s own garden and everything else being sourced from within a 25 mile radius, this is as about as local as it gets for a restaurant menu, with freshly picked vegetables and, of course, lots of piggy dishes. We had a selection of snacks to start including incredible pork crackling, scotch eggs, pork belly with pickled fennel, and smoked chipolatas. Then came beautiful garden herb gnocchi with pesto and Hampshire pancetta and tomato and goat’s cheese salad with air dried ham. Not wishing to stray from the theme, we went for a tender cut of slow cooked pork shoulder for the main, served with roasted cauliflower. Dee-licious. Having seriously pigged out, we had no room for dessert.

The Pig in New Forest is the original hotel but the group now have three others, including one on the beach in Dorset which sounds like an absolute winner if this place is anything to go by. For an amazing weekend break, The Pig has everything a couple of little piggies could wish for.
