Ocean House is one of the fanciest Japanese restaurants in London (named best Japanese restaurant in the UK by Zagat in 2013 no less) so an invitation to come and check out a five-course tasting menu with paired sakes was a bloody no-brainer.

Located on Old Brompton Road, the restaurant is smartly designed with an open kitchen in the middle of the room where you can sit up at the counter and watch the chefs at work. From the menu, we loved the raw fish courses, especially the sashimi (wild seabass, salmon and tuna belly) and the nigri sushi (yellowtail and red mullet). The Japanese wagyu beef was also pretty incredible – slow cooked for 24 hours, sliced into thin tender pieces, and served with aubergine and tomato. YUM.

We won’t claim to know much about sake (and after five rounds of the stuff we’re still a little fuzzy on the subject) but it was good to try so many different types and there were definitely some great matches with the food, particularly with the raw fish courses.

Yashin Ocean House is a great spot and if you’re looking for some interesting, high end Japanese food, it’s well worth checking out.
