to popular belief, Greenwich is actually in London – it’s just a bit tricky to get in and out of, particularly when the last tube has gone and the last boat has sailed. With that in mind, a boutique hotel such as The Pilot – located a 5 minute walk from the O2 and the Emirates Air Line – could come in very handy indeed.

Although The Pilot’s setting is far from picturesque – being located by towering new build flats on one side and a main road on another – the pub itself has been given a fresh lick of paint following a recent renovation. The pub has been around since 1801 so retains plenty of original charm alongside more modern design elements. Our upstairs double room was pretty spacious and had an amazing ‘rainforest’ shower, a huge comfy bed and some quirky design touches such as a stack of vintage suitcases and a whole wall filled with framed illustrations of birds. Oh and there’s a Nespresso machine and fresh coffee with cafeteria.

From the bed you have a view of the O2 and the Emirates cable cars slowly moving over the river – perhaps not the greatest hotel view in the world but interesting enough at least!

Downstairs the pub offers a fairly familiar pub menu with the odd more unusual dish such as tiger prawn ceviche with avocado mousse and popcorn. We also tried crispy pressed pork belly with black pudding croquettes and mains of roast sea trout and lamb rump with garlic mashed potato. No complaints from us – good solid pub grub and friendly service.

If you’re heading to an event at the O2, The Pilot would make a great shout for dinner and drinks away from the madness of the dome itself and is the perfect choice for those looking for somewhere with a bit of character to stay the night.
