The Gallivant is located in Camber Sands, just a 1 hour train journey from London to Rye, a short cab ride and you’re there, minutes from one of the best beaches in England. The hotel has 18 rooms and the decor is rustic chic, think drift wood furniture, pale blues and creams and simple touches.
The rooms are pretty small but this makes them uber cosy, especially as all feature homely touches from the homemade biscuits to the retro looking phones, soft cotton robes and White Company products. Outside of the rooms the restaurant is the heart of the hotel and attracts both locals and people from out of town.

After arriving we headed straight into dinner to try out the tasting menu which features the best local produce from the area paired with local wines (bar one). The meal starts with a glass of Chapel Down Brut and a Smoked Duck salad followed by the fish soup which was our favourite course. The rich, full flavoured soup is served in teacups on a board and comes with garlic rouille, crispy croutons and gruyere. Rye bay scallops, roast salt marsh lamb and a pear tarte tartin with candle – yes they remembered our birthday – completed the meal. Not forgetting the Somerset Cider Brandy which has quite the kick…
After dinner we strolled along the corridor to bed, before rising just in time for breakfast. Two huge bacon sarnies with homemade ketchup and we were ready to go exploring over the dunes to the beach, which stretches as far as the eye can see. Brisk beach walk done we hit Rye to potter around the antique shops, eat some freaking amazing carrot cake in The Cobbles Tea Room and explore the town.
