Dining in the summer is bliss and what’s better than an early evening meal with twinkling fairy lights and a pool gently rippling in the soft evening breeze…where’s this Majorca? No love, this is Dulwich. More precisely The Lido Cafe which caters for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner within the Art Deco Brockwell Lido. The modern British restaurant feels like a holiday destination with a fun family feel, a terrace overlooking the pool and set in an expansive green park…what’s missing…some bloke trying to sell you DVDs? Not here.
Brunch is what brought us here over the bank holiday weekend and it was evident that booking is essential, people popping in either waited it out or left having wished they’d booked.
We kicked things off with the salt Pollack Scotch egg served with roast garlic alioli and capers, the soft boiled egg perfectly runny, wrapped in tasty fish with a crunchy outer coating. Mains, well there was no stopping one of us going for the burger served in a Brioche bun with pickled cucumber, red onion, mayo and hand cut, triple cooked chips. The burger is a modest size, a fair weight in ones palm…it would not float in the pool. And it wouldn’t get the chance either.

For desserts the bitter chocolate mouse with espresso ice cream was rich in flavour, plenty sweet and tasty. But the clear winner and perhaps our favourite dish of the whole meal had to go to the English Rhubarb Trifle, a layer of stewed fruit topped with thick custard, soaked sponge and cream. Like TOTES ace.
