Even if you haven’t heard of Mele e Pere you’ll probably have seen it, it’s the restaurant on Brewer Street which has windows lined with weird and wonderful looking brightly coloured apple and pear ornaments – enough to rival the shelves on your Nana’s wall unit. The restaurant looks pretty deceptive from the outside as the ground floor dining area is small with large tables and chairs but downstairs the basement is a huge dining room, on trend with expose brickwork, trendy lighting, copper bar and what not.
The restaurant serves seasonal Italian food with a menu that changes daily and whatever can be, will be made in house including the ice-cream which we’ll get to later. To start the deep fried olives stuffed with a chilli sauce are a must, as is the arancini, three balls of full flavoured risotto and the super soft Cotechino sausage with puy lentils and mustard fruits.
A main of roasted wild duck with braised savoy cabbage and cherry puree was an impressive dish, a generous amount of tender duck complimented by sweet cherry puree. Whilst the salmon with clams and broccoli puree looked like a piece of art and tasted pretty good too.
For dessert the tiramisu was exactly that, however the star of the show was the homemade ice-cream. Creamy and rich the pistachio ice-cream might just been the best ice-cream we’ve ever eaten and it’s not even our favourite flavour – controversial! We ended with homemade apricot and peach vermouth, a great finish to an excellent meal.
For reasonably priced well executed Italian food, cracking cocktails and some of the best ice-cream in London Mele e Pere is where it’s at.
