Toof is the guy responsible for ‘chewing up’ London’s East End with gums and teeth and last month he produced a mini retrospective exhibition entitled Sweet Revenge. The graffiti artist is inspired by Vanitas paintings of sixteenth century Europe, Mexican Day of the Dead, Subway Art, and the underground comics of Vaughn Bodé, his characteristic gummy chompers are a true fusion of street and studio art. We managed to have a chat with the man behind the gums and as you can see he was absolutely full of crack, seriously we could not shut him up, what a guy.

US: What prompted the move from walls to canvas?

ST: Walls are the canvas & canvas is the walls.

US: The first thing we thought of when we saw your works, under the Mare Street bridge, was the foam gum sweets, I also noticed them in the big mouth at Sweet Revenge, were they your original inspiration?

ST: It comes from what’s happening around me.

US: We also notice the teeth and gums are healthy while the characters they are attached to are all decaying, we take it this is intended? Is there a bigger message you’re conveying through that?

ST: Sleep when your dead (sic)

US: Which are your personal favourite works that you have done?

ST: NYC water tower made me feel Alive, Giddy Up keeps me going.

US: What are your own teeth like? We sure hope they are sparkling, beautiful and white…

ST: No Comment (sic)
