Winston
first mini album ‘Sister Wife’ was released earlier last year from which ridiculously catchy pop songs hold a kind of laid back summer vibe not a millions miles from MGMT, guaranteed to stick inside your head.We were lucky enough to get a few words with the Detroit based singer.

US: You have a very eclectic sound, what influenced you growing up?

Alex: Growing up in Detroit had a huge impact on my musical taste. One of my earliest memories was listening to Stevie Wonder with my mom. Both of my parents were big motown and early rock and roll fans. I don’t think I started listening to modern radio stations until I was about 12 years old. I’m also a big country fan. Dolly Parton and Hank Williams are two of my idols, lyrically I don’t think you can beat early country music.

US: What do you think makes a good pop song?

Alex: If we are being technical, I guess its down to the melody. It seems so effortless, but I think writing a catchy pop melody is a true craft. I always like to look back at old Supremes songs and Temptations songs because in my eyes, though they were creating their own brand of music, the melodies and song structures were always the epitome of quality pop.

US: What does 2012 have in store for Alex Winston?

Alex: Hopefully a lot of touring. I’m also currently recording a western EP called Deviled Egg that I am really excited about.

US: What new music is getting you excited right now?

Alex:I’ve been listening to the new PJ Harvey record as well as Girls – Father, Son, Holy Ghost on repeat since they came out.

US: When you are in London, where do you go, where do you eat, drink and shop?

Alex: Tescos….everything is too damn expensive!
