After establishing a successful site in Soho, the Suvlaki team have taken their Athenian food east and set up shop on Brick Lane. The new place is a small but stylish one with artfully distressed walls, exposed lights and lots of marble and blue – just to remind you that you’re in a Greek restaurant.

Although suvlaki is the star of the show, the menu also features a range of snacks, small plates and larger signature dishes as well as their wraps and skewers, and good luck whittling your order down because it all sounds pretty tempting. In fact you could just order from the small plates list alone and easily have a great meal. We aimed for a spread across the sections though, including the obligatory pita and tzatziki, moreish courgette fritters, tender octopus with a fava bean puree and their version of the classic moussaka.

The skewers more than matched the quality of these other plates. We went for the mastelo (a cheese very similar to halloumi) and vegetable one, which came with pomegranate and grains, and the aged Scottish Texel lamb with chilli beetroot. Lamb can so easily go tough when cooked over coal but not here; it was perfectly cooked, juicy not chewy and one of our fave dishes of the night.

With an interesting Greek wine list, Mediterranean hospitality and a buzzing atmosphere, if you can’t jet off on a Greek holiday, Suvlaki is the next best thing.
