checking in: carmo’s boutique hotel, portugal

Sitting only 40 minutes outside Porto and on the edge of Portugal’s oldest town, Ponte De Lima, you’ll find Carmo’s Boutique Hotel and it’s a proper little gem. With 15 rooms, it is super homely and just from stepping inside the reception-cum-dining room you’ll find nick nacks, family photos, books, old radios, homemade wine and even a piano. The charming decor mixes the traditional with the contemporary and continues throughout the hotel.

Each room is individually designed and ours featured a huge four poster bed with a mirror on the ceiling (yes really!), original artworks, a zebra skin rug, and a private outdoor terrace. The bathroom certainly lived up to expectations too with marble surrounds, mirrored walls, a bath and separate rainforest shower, and some amazing toiletries.

Carmo’s Boutique Hotel might be small, but you could easily spend all weekend here without getting bored. The hotel houses a residents-only spa where you can soak in a bath filled with pure goat’s milk while sipping on champers, and with a jacuzzi, an indoor and outdoor pool, and lots of sun loungers it’s the perfect place to unwind.

When it comes to eating and drinking, you can expect honest Portuguese grub that’s made for sharing – specialities include goatling and codfish and lots of local wines. Breakfast is the real winner though with a table packed full of fresh fruit, yoghurt, granola, pastries, cakes, bread, meats, cheeses and eggs cooked to order. The freshly made pancakes are a must too!
