There’s been a lot of buzz around Victoria recently with a host of restaurants and cafes taking up residence in the new Nova development. Aster, a Nordic-French deli, cafe and restaurant, is the offering from D&D (the people behind Angler, Coq d’Argent. Fish Market, 100 Wardour St and many, many more). The large space has been divvied up so you can grab breakfast and lunch downstairs or go for the full evening experience on the first floor. The interiors reference the fusion of Scandinavia and France too – marble and exposed light bulbs mixed with velvet and leather – so the place feels special but not stuffy.

Executive Chef Helena Puolakka has gone for the simple but beautiful approach with the food and it totally works. Sweet scallops with celeriac and sea buckthorn; tender ox cheek with winter roots; duck breast with salsify, buckwheat and grapes; and blood orange jam, almond cake and rhubarb sorbet all looked as good as they tasted. If you’re feeling indulgent get a side of the truffle potato… it’s like the best dauphinoise you ever had taken up a notch.

The service is super slick and definitely take direction from the sommelier; he recommended a great Slovenian white that we never would have picked ourselves. Looks like Victoria might finally have some good restaurants to choose from!
