the whitechapel refectory & after hours

The Whitechapel Gallery is undoubtedly one of the best art galleries in London. Having been around since 1901 it’s a great building with a greater history, having hosted some of the biggest names including Picasso, Jackson Pollock and David Hockney. Always at the forefront of contemporary art, the gallery continues to stage incredible exhibitions including their brand new show, Theatre of the Natural World from artist Mark Dion.

But a visit to the gallery isn’t only about the art, the food shouldn’t be missed either. The gallery now features a small cafe run by the team behind 10 Greek Street and 8 Hoxton Square (RIP). During the day there’s a short menu of small plates such as a chorizo and potato tortilla with salad, mackerel pate bagel, Hoxton smoked trout, horseradish & watercress sandwich, and a butternut squash, lentil, beetroot & goats cheese salad.

On Thursday nights it flips to a wine bar and is open until 11pm, which just so happens to coincide with the gallery’s late opening night. So after hitting the shows you can talk art all night over a few glasses of very reasonably priced wine, plus excellent cheese and charcuterie boards. How very civilised…
