THE SONG THAT: YAK

Yak have easily been one of 2016’s most hyped band (and for good reason). In an attempt to get into the minds behind this infamously chaotic band, we asked Yak front man Oliver Henry Burslem all about the The Song That…

Got me into music…

This was the first song on his live comeback gig which I remember watching as a kid around Xmas time. I can’t remember a great deal about the occasion but I do remember it was the first time I fancied myself as the next Elvis. Posing in front of the mirror with an old guitar, quiff barnet…I was 5 and dreaming.

Reminds me of my favourite festival…

I remember going to Glastonbury and not seeing one band as i was too busy having fun, except I heard the last gasp of Macca’s set which was a rendition of The Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’. I just remember what looked to be an army of people marching in unison towards me chanting, “Na na na na na”. Every time I hear the song it reminds me of that trip to Glastonbury.

I love this year so far…

My girlfriend sent me this track the other day and it blew me away. Her voice could cut through concrete. She could probably sing my shoplist and it would make you shed a tear or two. I’ve also been playing “Lightworks” by J Dilla. I’m going through a phase of listening to a lot of music made from samples and this is sampled from Raymond Scott.

I want played at my funeral…

I’m torn between high drama, the inappropriate or a jovial gesture. If it was the first then I would say Spacemen 3’s “Lord Can You Hear Me”, that would be really milking it. If it were the second then it would be “Music For Han Bennink” by The Peter Brötzmann Octet. That would make the mourners run out the back door. But I would say I like the idea of playing the most popular funeral song at the time of my death….someone else can decide what that is.

I would play in a set to impress…

Mainly because it features guitarist/cosmonaut Brian (the badger) May.

Always gets me up and dancing…

Reminds me of the back room of a Wolverhampton club that was the first place I started going out. It was loosely speaking, a northern soul night: talcum powder, fag ends and lager on the floor. Gets your feet moving.

Sums me up…

This track sums me up for many reason but none of them I could express in words.
