LOTI EATS: TIGER DRAM

Here’s a little factoid for you: India consumes more whisky than any other nation. Surprising? Well, not so much when you consider that whisky and curry are in fact the perfect culinary partners, so if you want to experience the Indian cuisine like a local then forget the beer and order a dram instead. With this in mind, Zia Trench, owner of Battersea Rise joint Cornish Tiger, has opened a new pop-up Tiger Dram, which is taking up the tradition and serving up curries and whiskies as well as refined sharing plates.

Tiger Dram is found round the back of its parent restaurant and entered by a secret entrance. Once inside, we were instructed to rub the Buddha’s belly for our experience to begin and lo and behold, our server arrived ready to take our order. The temporary restaurant, which will be running until the end of year, shares the same homely and informal vibe of Cornish Tiger.

We started our meal with the tangy and moreish Papri Chaat and the satisfyingly crunchy soft-shell crab tempura with mango pickle chutney. While the sharing plates cannot be faulted, the curries are the main event. We devoured the deliciously spicy lamb rogan josh and Rajastan chicken curry alongside our whiskies – a 15 year old Glenfiddich and a Wild Turkey 81 Straight Bourbon Whiskey – which slipped down easily alongside the food, adding another layer of flavour to the dishes. This month’s special naan with blue cheese, onion seeds and truffle oil was a welcome surprise of interesting flavours.

For good measure, we finished off by sampling some of the insanely good, made-on-site ice cream and a couple more drams of a citrusy Japanese Nikka Miyagikyo, which was banging and refreshing for an end of meal tipple. Even if you’re not a whisky fan, Tiger Dram’s menu has a variety of flavours, and coupled with a curry you’ll definitely be coming back for more.
