spoke to Tarek Musa from Spring King, to find out their favourites for ‘The Song That…’

Got me into music…

The Hollies – ‘Jennifer Eccles’. One of my earliest memories was having a drum lesson with a guy called Roland. I only had two lessons with him but the first hour with him was me and a cassette deck just jamming to songs whilst he suggested certain things. This is one of the songs I used to play to growing up. It’s quite straight forward and catchy, and has a variety of sections which gave me a few different beats to practise.

Reminds me of my favourite festival…

Easy Star All Stars – ‘Time’. In 2009 I went to Standon Calling with some friends, and I remember seeing Sun Ra Arkestra, Femi Kuti and The Positive Force, Mumford and Sons when there was about 50 people in the room and Easy Star All Stars. They were a huge highlight for me, as I was obsessed with dub and reggae music. They played at sunset and we were all in the clouds.

I love this year so far…

Chris Cohen – ‘Torrey Pine’. The new single off Chris Cohen’s upcoming album is incredible. His last album ‘Overgrown Path’ was a huge favourite of mine. I can see myself listening to this track every night this summer. Chris has played in Deerhoof, and has toured in Ariel Pinks band. Dreamy sounds.

I want played at my funeral…

Penny & The Quarters – ‘You and Me’. This is a tricky one. It would probably be something along the lines of Penny & The Quarters “You and Me”. I love the simplicity of this track.

I would play in a set to impress…

Bruce Springsteen – ‘Dancing in The Dark’. The Boss. Dancing in The Dark would definitely be in the set!

Always gets me up and dancing…

Mate Clifford – ‘Things Are Going My Way’. How could you not want to dance to this?! Mataya Clifford and his jumpin hit ‘Things Are Going My Way’.

Sums me up…

The Beach Boys – ‘Girl Don’t Tell Me’. Probably about 82% of all The Beach Boys catalogue, but the song that really got me into them was ‘Girl Don’t Tell Me’. It reminded me of summers in Poland staying with my family. Spring King started off the back of love stories, and The Beach Boys showed me the best of the best 60’s pop love you can get your hands on.
