is located on the top floor of the National Portrait Gallery and has probably one of the best dining views in London. Sure it doesn’t have the height of your Sushisambas but being right on Trafalgar Square it brings you close to many of London’s most famous sights. From our table we looked directly across the rooftops to nelsons column, with Big Ben and Westminster Abbey in the distance, and the London Eye and Shard to the left.

Luckily, the food is just as good as the views and at £31.50 for three courses is pretty good value for central London. We began with two beautiful fresh starters, a confit baby beetroot salad with goat’s curd and spiced pecans and house cured salmon with pickled cucumber and melba toast, both of which we highly recommend. Being there for Sunday lunch we went for a roast on the mains, a huge slice of Hereford beef with potatoes and Yorkshire pudding and also a side of rosemary roast carrots which were probably the best carrots we’ve ever had! As a roast alternative, we also had the pan fried plaice fillets with pea puree, samphire and butter sauce which also hit the spot. For dessert we had a classic Eaton mess which was bang on with big chunks of chewy marshmallow.

Portrait is a great spot and still a bit of a hidden gem so it’s a great shout if you’re looking to impress someone with great food and some pretty special views.
