19TH JANUARY 2015

These days when you tell people you’re really into a new shoegaze band they tend to roll their eyes and say ‘come on man, you need to expand your music taste’. However, having listened to Californian foursome Francisco The Man we now have the perfect response, which is very simply put using the phrase ‘Why don’t you go fuck yourself’.

Loose Ends is the debut album from the band that has been around a while, seven years in fact and has seen them release an EP along with a string of 7-inch singles. It is predominately a shoegaze record of psychedelic trippy space jams, heavy guitars and dreamy melodies which are instantly likeable. The opening track ‘You & I’ misleads you through a rattle, shake and upbeat drum intro before dropping halftime into a shoegaze hole.

Other LOTI faves include single ‘Big Ideas’ a bad ass riffage of noise and drums with pop sensibilities and hooks that secure it well and truly into our brain. ‘Progress’ is in a similar vein of fury though slightly softer in its excision, the beat of which keeps you in the groove the whole way through. There’s even an 8 minutes stoner jam in ‘In My Dreams’ which you might want to put on before bedtime, close your eyes and see what happens.

The production on the album is glorious and each track seems to glisten as they take on different moods ranging from euphoric to blissed out fury. Loose Ends is beautiful and transcends the listener on a journey of love that is lost. The most upbeat tracks seem to be about lost, longing, frustration and boredom but come across as uplifting anthems. Even their names are awesome, Brock Woolsey, Scotty Cantino, Nestor Romero and Abdeel Ortega…are they winning or what?
