16TH APRIL 2014

Cut Copy is the type of band that make you believe that being a musician is the best job in the world (if you didn’t think it already). After watching lead singer Dan Whitford enthusiastically own the stage at the Forum last Wednesday night, we were more than a little bit tempted to quit our day jobs and ask if there was room for us on tour.

Back in London following a visit in November (when latest album Free Your Mind had just been released) the electro experts provided some joy for those of us who needed a hump day pick-me-up, and seemed to have a pretty good time doing so. Fellow Australians RÜFÜS were ideal openers, their style of dance-pop proving a perfect fit for early arrivers ready boogie. The trio proved their musical chops with the undeniably catchy Take Me and showed why their recent album Atlas made it to number one in their native country.

Despite their last gig Hackney’s Oval Space being less than six months ago, Cut Copy come along with a whole host of new elements to showcase, including hypnotic background visuals and a lighting show to rival any rave. They navigated the tricky mix of new and old material like pros, making sure there was always a crowd favourite around the corner. Tracks like Lights and Music and Out There on the Ice were euphoric and indispersing them with less familiar songs like We Are Explorers guaranteed crowd exhilaration throughout.

Although we may not possess the same level of joy as Whitford as we stroll down the corridor of our 9-5, he and his band mates certainly gave us enough pep in our step to get through the rest of the week.
