& Sugar is housed in a grade II listed historical rum warehouse, hence the not-so-catchy name, and stocks a huge amount of premium rums from around the world, so fans of the stuff will certainly have a jolly old time here. We started on a couple of classic mojitos which were bang on, as were the ones that followed….

Being on the doorstep of Billingsgate market, fish rightly features highly on the menu and we went fish all the way, starting with a crab salad and opting for the roast sea trout main (£14). The crab ‘salad’ (£6.90) arrived very prettily presented with the crab meat shaped into neat little balls and dotted with picked cucumber and flowers and tasted fantastic. Our goat cheese salad (£5.90) with purple and yellow beetroot was fresh, light and tasty, a solid winner.

Mains arrived on HUGE slates. Two of them would barely fit on the table and the poor staff will probably get back injuries lugging them around all day! Roast sea trout was excellent and accompanied with smashed potatoes and crawfish ravioli. Our other main of slow roast pork belly (£13.50) was fine but a little on the dry side and had flabby, non-crisp skin which was a bit of a shame. We finished triumphantly by sharing a sticky rum and toffee pudding (£6.50) that was as rich and satisfying as it should be. Stick to the fish, rum, and sugar we say!

The room wasn’t exactly buzzing and the décor does have the slight hint of a themed pirate restaurant, but all in all Rum & Sugar serves great grub at very decent prices, and with their express lunch menu it’s a good spot to get a great value lunch in Canary Wharf.
