almost impossible to believe that it has already been a year since the Olympic games began but a full twelve months has indeed gone by, which means events commemorating the anniversary of the Games are here already! The Open East Festival is one such event, a weekend of music, food and theatre timed to coincide with the anniversary of the London 2012 opening ceremony. It also gives us a first glimpse of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London’s newest open green space!

Hosted over two days on 27th and 28th July, a wide variety of musicians will be performing on two stages, from indie bands, to DJs to a supergroup of Malian musicians, plus theatre curated by The Barbican and Create London. Children will be entertained with a multitude of things to see, make and do. Over 70 different food stalls will provide a taste of the world for foodies with craft beers provided by local breweries all within 10 miles of the park. Both days will build up to a mystery grand finale which is being kept top secret for now but we are promised that it’s going to be huge!

The park is set to open officially in Spring 2014, so for those interested to see what has happened to the area since the athletes moved out, this is a sneak peak. Pop-up performances will be happening all over the site, so explore the riverbanks and parklands as well as the stage areas. Tickets are on sale now, at £9.50 for adults and £6 for children. Part of the idea of the Olympics is to provide a long-lasting legacy after the Games have finished and the creation of a new park for Londoners to enjoy is a great way to enjoy the long-term benefits, and the Open East festival will kick things off in style!

Tickets will be available from ticketmaster.
