Southern Kitchen may have only opened this month but there’s already been plenty of hype around it’s beer can chicken. That’s chicken served with an open beer can inside it which has been cooked that way and thus is soft and juicy – not chicken in a beer can as that would be plain weird. The laid back kitchen and bar serves up a menu of Deep South inspired food dishes and cocktails which we have to say are all pretty appealing.

We started with the Popcorn Shrimp served with kick-ass chilli lime salsa, full flavoured slow braised beef chilli cup with crispy tortillas and sour cream and the arancini like corn and monterey jack rice balls with cajun mustard, red pepper and onion salsa. No complaints here!

JOES

For main we felt it our duty to have the Beer Can Chicken, a whole bird with BBQ rub which is cut by the waiter at your table. The bird comes with two sides, we went for the southern fried potatoes and salad. For guaranteed meat sweats order a side of the juicy pulled pork, it’s banging.

The meal finished us off and there was still plenty of chicken left over for us to take home, where we discovered another Joe’s fan. For big portions of hearty American grub and quirky cocktails Joe’s Southern Kitchen ticks all of the boxes, it’s good value and doesn’t take itself too seriously – what’s not to like?
